1. to purify; to cleanse (e.g. air, water, spirit)

   这座工厂的废气经过处理后才排放，目的是净化空气。 zhè zuò gōngchǎng de fèiqì jīngguò chǔlǐ hòu cái páifàng mùdì shì jìnghuà kōngqì — The factory's exhaust is only released after treatment; the goal is to purify the air.

2. to purify (figurative: to cleanse morally or politically)

   在政治运动中，所谓的整肃常以净化党内为名。 zài zhèngzhì yùndòng zhōng suǒwèi de zhěngsù chángyǐ jìnghuà dǎngnèi wèimíng — In political movements, the so-called purges are often called 'purifying the party'.
