净 — jìng

1. clean; free from dirt

   房间很净。 fáng jiān hěn jìng 。 — The room is very clean.

2. completely; entirely

   这件事被净忘了。 zhè jiàn shì bèi jìng wàng le 。 — This matter was completely forgotten.

3. only; merely

   他净说些闲话。 tā jìng shuō xiē xián huà 。 — He only talks nonsense.

4. net (after deductions) — as in net income, net exports

   净利润比去年增加了。 jìng lì rùn bǐ qù nián zēng jiā le 。 — Net profit increased compared with last year.

5. (in Chinese opera) a painted-face male role

   他在京剧里饰演净角。 tā zài jīng jù lǐ shì yǎn jìng jiǎo 。 — He plays a painted-face role in Peking opera.
