冷战 — lěngzhàn

1. the Cold War (the geopolitical tension between the US and the Soviet Union, esp. 1947–1991)

   第二次世界大战后，美苏冷战持续了数十年。 dìèrcìshìjièdàzhàn hòu měisū lěngzhàn chíxù le shùshínián — After World War II, the US–Soviet Cold War lasted for decades.

1. cold war; a strained, unfriendly relationship (between people, groups, organizations) with little direct confrontation

   办公室里两位同事最近在冷战，气氛很尴尬。 bàngōngshì lǐ liǎngwèi tóngshì zuìjìn zài lěngzhàn qìfēn hěn gāngà — The two colleagues in the office have been in a cold war recently; the atmosphere is awkward.

2. to be in a cold war with someone; to barely speak to someone (after a quarrel)

   他们因为误会冷战了好几天，谁也不先开口。 tāmen yīnwèi wùhuì lěngzhàn le hǎo jǐtiān shuí yě bùxiān kāikǒu — They had a cold war for several days because of a misunderstanding; neither of them spoke first.
