冲 — chōng

1. to dash against (of water)

   海浪不停地冲着礁石。 hǎilàng bùtíng dì chōngzhe jiāoshí — Waves kept dashing against the rocks.

2. to mix with water; to dilute

   把药粉冲在温水里服下。 bǎ yàofěn chōng zài wēnshuǐ lǐ fúxià — Mix the powdered medicine in warm water before taking it.

3. to infuse (e.g., tea)

   请用热水冲茶叶五分钟。 qǐngyòng rèshuǐ chōng cháyè wǔfēnzhōng — Please infuse the tea leaves in hot water for five minutes.

4. to rinse; to flush

   手受伤了，要用清水冲干净。 shǒu shòushāng le yàoyòng qīngshuǐ chōng gānjìng — Your hand is injured; you should flush it clean with water.

5. to develop (photographic film)

   他把胶卷拿去冲洗了。 tā bǎ jiāojuǎn ná qù chōngxǐ le — He took the film to be developed.

6. to rise in the air

   尘土被风冲起来，遮住了视线。 chéntǔ bèi fēng chōng qǐlái zhēzhù le shìxiàn — Dust was whipped up by the wind and obscured the view.

7. to clash; to collide with

   两辆车在十字路口冲了个满怀。 liǎngliàngchē zài shízìlùkǒu chōngle gè mǎnhuái — The two cars collided head-on at the intersection.

8. thoroughfare; main street

   他家住在村中的大冲旁。 tā jiāzhù zài cūn zhōng de dà chōng páng — His home is by the main thoroughfare of the village.

9. to go straight ahead; to rush forward

   他见到机会就冲上去抢篮板。 tā jiàndào jīhuì jiù chōngshàngqù qiǎng lánbǎn — He rushed forward to grab the rebound as soon as he saw the chance.

10. to clash (in confrontation)

    两队在决赛中猛烈冲突。 liǎngduì zài juésài zhōng měngliè chōngtū — The two teams clashed fiercely in the final.

冲 — chòng

1. powerful; vigorous; pungent

   这汤味道很冲，要放点水稀释。 zhè tāng wèidào hěn chōng yào fàngdiǎn shuǐ xīshì — This soup is very strong (in flavor); add some water to dilute it.

2. towards; in view of

   冲着这个问题，我们需要重新评估计划。 chōngzhe zhège wèntí wǒmen xūyào chóngxīn pínggū jìhuà — In view of this issue, we need to reassess the plan.
