冒 — mào

1. to emit; to give off; to send out

   烟从工厂的烟囱中冒出来。 yān cóng gōng chǎng de yān cōng zhōng mào chū lái 。 — Smoke came out of the factory chimney.

2. to brave; to face (a danger or difficulty)

   他冒着大雨出门去工作。 tā mào zhe dà yǔ chū mén qù gōng zuò 。 — He went out to work braving the heavy rain.

3. (bound form) reckless; daring

   他的冒险行为让大家很担心。 tā de mào xiǎn xíng wéi ràng dà jiā hěn dān xīn 。 — His reckless actions worried everyone.

4. to falsely adopt (someone's identity etc.); to feign

   他冒用别人的名字登记入学。 tā mào yòng bié rén de míng zì dēng jì rù xué 。 — He registered for school using someone else's name.

5. (literary) to cover

   薄雾冒上山谷，遮住了远处的景色。 bó wù mào shàng shān gǔ ， zhē zhù le yuǎn chù de jǐng sè 。 — A thin mist rose over the valley, covering the distant view.

6. surname Mao

   他姓冒，来自北方的一个小镇。 tā xìng mào ， lái zì běi fāng de yí gè xiǎo zhèn 。 — His surname is Mao; he comes from a small town in the north.
