再 — zài

1. again; once more; re-

   请你再说一遍。 qǐng nǐ zàishuō yībiàn — Please say it again.

2. further; beyond this point of time; then (after something, and not until then)

   他先休息，等他好了再开始。 tā xiān xiūxī děng tā hǎo le zài kāishǐ — He'll rest first; we'll start when he's better.

3. (placed before an adjective) more (to indicate a greater degree)

   天气预报说明天会更冷，再冷一点儿要下雪。 tiānqìyùbào shuōmíng tiānhuì gèng lěng zài lěng yìdiǎnér yào xiàxuě — The forecast says it'll be colder tomorrow; if it's even colder, it'll snow.

4. used to introduce additional information: furthermore; also (as in 再则, 再就是)

   他先要学习外语，再则要了解当地文化。 tā xiānyào xuéxíwàiyǔ zàizé yào liǎojiě dāngdì wénhuà — He must first study a foreign language; furthermore, he needs to learn the local culture.

5. no matter how ... (followed by an adjective or verb, often with 也 or 都 for emphasis)

   再怎么努力也不一定能成功，但值得一试。 zài zěnme nǔlì yě bù yídìng néng chénggōng dàn zhíde yī shì — No matter how hard you try you won't necessarily succeed, but it's worth a try.

6. (literary) to reappear; to reoccur

   春光再临，万物复苏。 chūnguāng zài lín wànwù fùsū — Spring light returns; all things revive.
