1. to raise (animals)

   他们在农村养了很多牛和羊。 tāmen zài nóngcūn yǎng le hěnduō niú hé yáng — They raise many cattle and sheep in the countryside.

2. to bring up; to rear (children)

   父母负责养孩子直到他们成年。 fùmǔ fùzé yǎng háizi zhídào tāmen chéngnián — Parents are responsible for raising their children until they reach adulthood.

3. to keep (pets)

   她在家里养了两只猫。 tā zài jiālǐ yǎng le liǎngzhǐ māo — She keeps two cats at home.

4. to support; to provide for (financially)

   他工作养活全家。 tā gōngzuò yǎnghuó quánjiā — He works to support the whole family.

5. to give birth (rare/archaic usage in some contexts)

   她为这个家养下了三个孩子。 tā wèi zhège jiāyǎng xià le sāngè háizi — She bore three children for this family. (archaic)
