公 — gōng

1. public; open to or owned by the public

   公园是大家都可以去的地方。 gōngyuán shì dàjiā dōu kěyǐ qù de dìfāng — A park is a place everyone can go.

2. collectively owned; common (belonging to a group)

   这个村子的土地是公有的。 zhège cūnzi de tǔdì shì gōngyǒu de — The village land is publicly (collectively) owned.

3. common; shared

   几个人公用一台电脑。 jǐgè rén gōngyòng yītái diànnǎo — Several people share one computer.

4. international; common to many countries (as in high seas, metric system, calendar)

   公海是不受任何国家管辖的海域。 gōnghǎi shì bùshòu rènhé guójiā guǎnxiá de hǎiyù — The high seas are waters not under any country's jurisdiction.

5. make public; announce

   公司决定将调查结果公之于众。 gōngsī juédìng jiāng diàochájiéguǒ gōngzhīyúzhòng — The company decided to make the investigation results public.

6. fair; just (impartial)

   法官要保持公正，不偏不倚。 fǎguān yào bǎochí gōngzhèng bùpiānbùyǐ — A judge must remain fair and impartial.

7. Duke (highest of five ranks of nobility)

   齐桓公是春秋时期最有影响力的诸侯之一。 qíhuángōng shì chūnqiūshíqī zuì yǒu yǐngxiǎnglì de zhūhóu zhīyī — Duke Huan of Qi was one of the most influential lords of the Spring and Autumn period.

8. honorable gentleman; an honorific used for certain persons (literary/archaic)

   他被尊称为周公，深受百姓敬仰。 tā bèi zūnchēng wéi zhōu gōng shēnshòu bǎixìng jìngyǎng — He was respectfully addressed as Lord Zhou, deeply revered by the people.

9. father-in-law (colloquial/shortened form)

   我下周要去看望公。 wǒ xiàzhōu yào qù kànwàng gōng — I'm going to visit my father-in-law next week.

10. male (of animals); masculine (used as a prefix in compounds)

    这只公羊已经成年了。 zhè zhǐ gōngyáng yǐjīng chéngnián le — This ram is already an adult.
