1. to excuse sb; to exempt

   公司免了他这次的考核，继续保留职位。 gōngsī miǎn le tā zhècì de kǎohé jìxù bǎoliú zhíwèi — The company excused him from this assessment and kept his position.

2. to remove or dismiss from office

   那位官员因贪污被免职。 nàwèi guānyuán yīn tānwū bèi miǎnzhí — That official was dismissed from office for corruption.

3. to avoid; to avert; to escape (a situation)

   他凭机智免了一场祸事。 tā píng jīzhì miǎn le yīcháng huòshì — He averted a disaster with his quick wit.

4. to be prohibited (less common meaning)

   古代某些言论在书中常常被免。 gǔdài mǒuxiē yánlùn zài shū zhōng chángcháng bèi miǎn — In ancient times certain speech was often banned in books.
