1. children (general term for one's offspring)

   他们有三个儿女，两个儿子一个女儿。 tāmen yǒu sāngè érnǚ liǎnggè érzi yígè nǚér — They have three children: two sons and one daughter.

2. sons and daughters (emphasizing male and female children)

   在传统家庭里，人们常把儿女放在很重要的位置。 zài chuántǒng jiātíng lǐ rénmen cháng bǎ érnǚ fàngzài hěn zhòngyào de wèizhì — In traditional families, people often place great importance on their sons and daughters.

3. a young man and a young woman (often a couple, sometimes used romantically)

   诗里描写了一对儿女相互思念的场景。 shī lǐ miáoxiě le yīduì érnǚ xiānghù sīniàn de chǎngjǐng — The poem depicts a scene of a young man and woman longing for each other.
