偏偏 — piānpiān

1. unfortunately; as it happened (indicating that something turned out contrary to expectation)

   我早已订好票，偏偏临时出差走不开。 wǒ zǎoyǐ dìnghǎo piào piānpiān línshí chūchāi zǒubùkāi — I had already booked the ticket; unfortunately I had to go on a business trip at the last minute and couldn't go.

2. stubbornly; contrarily; against reason (doing something deliberately or perversely different from what's expected)

   他明明知道危险，偏偏要一个人去爬山。 tā míngmíng zhīdào wēixiǎn piānpiān yào yígè rén qù páshān — He clearly knew it was dangerous, yet he stubbornly insisted on climbing the mountain alone.

3. precisely; only; of all people (emphasizing that someone or something alone is singled out)

   偏偏你知道这个秘密，真是奇怪。 piānpiān nǐ zhīdào zhège mìmì zhēnshì qíguài — Of all people, you happen to know this secret — that's really strange.
