借 — jiè

1. to borrow; to lend (when used with 給/给 or 出); to make use of; to avail oneself of; (sometimes followed by 著/着) by; with

   我向朋友借了一本书。 wǒ xiàng péngyǒu jièle yī běnshū — I borrowed a book from a friend.

2. to lend (used in combination with 給/给 or 出); e.g. 借給 means 'lend to'

   他把车借给了同事。 tā bǎ chē jiègěi le tóngshì — He lent the car to a colleague.

3. to make use of; to avail oneself of (often used before nouns or verbs)

   他借助现代科技完成了研究。 tā jièzhù xiàndàikējì wánchéng le yánjiū — He completed the research with the help of modern technology.

4. by; with (used sometimes with 著/着)

   借著阳光，花儿开得更灿烂。 jiè zhù yángguāng huāér kāidé gèng cànlàn — With the sunlight, the flowers bloom more brilliantly.
