倒 — dǎo

1. to fall; to collapse

   墙突然倒了，幸好没人受伤。 qiáng tūrán dào le xìnghǎo méirén shòushāng — The wall suddenly collapsed; luckily no one was hurt.

2. to lie horizontally; to topple over

   树被风刮倒了，整个躺在地上。 shù bèi fēng guādào le zhěnggè tǎng zài dìshàng — The tree was blown down by the wind and lies on the ground.

3. to fail; to go bankrupt

   那家公司因为管理不善倒了。 nàjiā gōngsī yīnwèi guǎnlǐ bùshàn dào le — That company went bankrupt due to poor management.

4. to overthrow (a government or regime)

   人民起义最终倒了那个腐败的政权。 rénmínqǐyì zuìzhōng dào le nàge fǔbài de zhèngquán — The uprising eventually overthrew that corrupt regime.

5. to change (trains, buses); to transfer

   在北京换乘地铁要在第三站倒车。 zài běijīng huànchéng dìtiě yào zài dìsānzhàn dàochē — To transfer subways in Beijing you must change at the third stop.

6. to move around; to resell at a profit

   他把便宜的门票倒卖出去赚差价。 tā bǎ piányi de ménpiào dǎomài chūqù zhuàn chājià — He resold the cheap tickets at a profit.

1. to invert; to turn upside down; to tip out; to pour out

   把瓶子倒过来，把剩下的水倒出来。 bǎ píngzi dào guòlái bǎ shèngxià de shuǐ dào chūlái — Turn the bottle upside down and pour out the remaining water.

2. inverted; upside down; reversed; backward

   这张照片是倒着挂的，请帮我正过来。 zhè zhāng zhàopiān shì dào zhe guà de qǐng bāng wǒ zhèng guòlái — This photo is hung upside down; please help me right it.

3. but; yet (contrary to expectation)

   他很忙，倒是答应了会来帮忙。 tā hěnmáng dǎo shì dāyìng le huìlái bāngmáng — He is very busy, but he did agree to come help.
