   音乐对心情有很大的作用。 yīnyuè duì xīnqíng yǒu hěndà de zuòyòng — Music has a great effect on one's mood.

2. action; function; activity; the way something works or operates

   机器的作用是提高生产效率。 jīqì de zuòyòng shì tígāo shēngchǎn xiàolǜ — The function of the machine is to increase production efficiency.

3. impact; result; effect (of an action or event)

   这项政策的长期作用还有待观察。 zhèxiàng zhèngcè de chángqī zuòyòng háiyǒu dài guānchá — The long-term effects of this policy remain to be seen.
