1. to set oneself against; to oppose

   他总是喜欢作对，跟大家意见相反。 tā zǒngshì xǐhuān zuòduì gēn dàjiā yìjiàn xiāngfǎn — He always likes to oppose others and takes the opposite view from everyone.

2. to make a pair; to match (as a couple or pair)

   他们两人常被看成作对出场。 tāmen liǎng rén cháng bèi kànchéng zuòduì chūchǎng — The two of them are often seen as appearing as a pair.
