住 — zhù

1. to live; to dwell; to stay; to reside

   我住在北京已经快十年了。 wǒ zhù zài běijīng yǐjīng kuài shínián le — I have been living in Beijing for almost ten years.

2. to stop (temporarily); to remain; to stay put

   雨太大了，我们在亭子里住了一会儿才走。 yǔ tàidà le wǒmen zài tíngzi lǐ zhù le yīhuìer cái zǒu — The rain was too heavy; we stayed in the pavilion for a while before leaving.

3. (suffix) indicating firmness, steadiness, or coming to a halt (used after verbs or adjectives)

   他用手紧紧抓住了绳子。 tāyòng shǒu jǐnjǐnzhuāzhù le shéngzi — He gripped the rope tightly with his hand.
