估计 — gūjì

1. to estimate (a quantity, size, cost, etc.)

   我估计这个项目需要三个月才能完成。 wǒ gūjì zhège xiàngmù xūyào sāngè yuè cáinéng wánchéng — I estimate this project will take three months to complete.

2. to assess (value, situation, risk, etc.)

   保险公司会先估计损失的金额。 bǎoxiǎngōngsī huì xiān gūjì sǔnshī de jīné — The insurance company will first assess the amount of the loss.

3. to calculate (roughly); to work out

   他快速估计了材料的用量。 tā kuàisù gūjì le cáiliào de yòngliàng — He quickly calculated the amount of materials needed.

4. (colloquial) to reckon; to figure (that ...)

   我估计他已经出发了。 wǒ gūjì tā yǐjīng chūfā le — I reckon he's already left.

5. to think (that ...); to suppose (often used to express a guess)

   我估计他不会来，天气太糟了。 wǒ gūjì tā búhuì lái tiānqì tài zāo le — I think he won't come; the weather is too bad.
