1. to attempt; to try (often implies a plan or intent, sometimes with negative connotation)

   他企图逃避责任，结果被发现了。 tā qǐtú táobìzérèn jiéguǒ bèi fāxiàn le — He tried to evade responsibility, but was found out.

2. an attempt; an effort; a plotted intention (often used about a planned action)

   警方挫败了一起暗杀的企图。 jǐngfāng cuòbài le yìqǐ ànshā de qǐtú — The police foiled an assassination attempt.
