令 — lìng

1. to order; to command

   上级令我们明天早上集合。 shàngjí lìng wǒmen míngtiān zǎoshàng jíhé — The superior ordered us to assemble tomorrow morning.

2. an order; warrant; writ (noun)

   法院下达了传票和执法令。 fǎyuàn xiàdá le chuánpiào hé zhífǎ lìng — The court issued subpoenas and enforcement orders.

3. to cause; to make something happen

   这项措施令物价上涨。 zhèxiàng cuòshī lìng wùjiàshàngzhǎng — This measure caused prices to rise.

4. virtuous; used in honorific titles

   请问令尊近来身体可好？ qǐngwèn lìngzūn jìnlái shēntǐ kěhǎo — May I ask how your honorable father has been lately?

5. season; (archaic) a government post; also a type of short song or poem

   陶渊明曾任彭泽县令，不久便弃官归隐。 táoyuānmíng céng rèn péngzéxiàn lìng bùjiǔ biàn qìguān guīyǐn — Tao Yuanming once served as magistrate of Pengze County, but soon resigned and retired.

令 — líng

1. element used only in certain proper names (e.g. 脊令, 令狐)

   令狐是一个复姓。 línghú shì yígè fùxìng — Linghu is a compound surname.

令 — lǐng

1. classifier for a ream of paper

   这堆稿纸有两令。 zhè duī gǎozhǐ yǒu liǎng lìng — This stack of manuscript paper is two reams.
