1. to act on behalf of somebody in a position of responsibility; to act as an agent or proxy

   经理出差三天，由副经理代理处理日常事务。 jīnglǐ chūchāi sāntiān yóu fùjīnglǐ dàilǐ chǔlǐ rìchángshìwù — The manager is on a business trip for three days; the deputy manager will act on his behalf to handle daily matters.

2. agent; proxy; surrogate; (computing) proxy server or proxy

   他在这家公司当票务代理，负责售票和退票手续。 tā zài zhèjiā gōngsī dàng piàowù dàilǐ fùzé shòupiào hé tuìpiào shǒuxù — He works as a ticket agent at this company, responsible for ticket sales and refunds.
