亏 — kuī

1. to lose (money); to have a deficit; to be in the red

   这家公司今年亏了很多钱。 zhèjiā gōngsī jīnnián kuīle hěnduō qián — This company lost a lot of money this year.

2. to be deficient; to lack

   他这次考试亏在准备不够。 tā zhècì kǎoshì kuī zài zhǔnbèi bùgòu — He fell short on this exam because he didn't prepare enough.

3. to treat unfairly; to disadvantage; to do someone dirty

   他被老板亏了，工资没给够。 tā bèi lǎobǎn kuīle gōngzī méigěi gòu — He was treated unfairly by the boss; his salary wasn't paid in full.

4. luckily; fortunately; thanks to (usually followed by a clause indicating a favorable circumstance)

   亏得他及时赶到，才没出事。 kuīde tā jíshí gǎndào cái méi chūshì — Luckily he arrived in time, so nothing bad happened.

5. (colloquial) used to introduce an ironic or sarcastic remark about someone who has fallen short of expectations

   亏你还说自己很能干！ kuī nǐ hái shuō zìjǐ hěn nénggàn — And you still call yourself capable!
