事业 — shìyè

1. career; one's life's work; long-term profession or enterprise

   他把教育作为一生的事业。 tā bǎ jiàoyù zuòwéi yīshēng de shìyè — He regards education as his life's work.

2. undertaking; project; organized activity (often large or public)

   这个城市的基础设施建设是一个长期的事业。 zhège chéngshì de jīchǔshèshī jiànshè shì yígè chángqī de shìyè — The city's infrastructure development is a long-term undertaking.

3. a cause (charitable, political, revolutionary); a publicly funded institution or enterprise

   支持弱势群体的事业需要社会各界的参与。 zhīchí ruòshìqúntǐ de shìyè xūyào shèhuìgèjiè de cānyù — Causes that support vulnerable groups need participation from all sectors of society.
