乱 — luàn

1. disorder; chaos; upheaval; riot

   战争让这里变得很乱。 zhànzhēng ràng zhèlǐ biàndé hěnluàn — The war threw this place into great disorder.

2. in a confused state of mind; confused; disordered

   他被突如其来的噩耗弄得很乱，不知道该怎么办。 tā bèi tūrúqílái de èhào nòng dé hěnluàn bùzhī dào gāi zěnmebàn — He was thrown into confusion by the sudden bad news and didn't know what to do.

3. to throw into disorder; to mix up; to muddle

   孩子们把房间弄得一团乱，妈妈回来时很生气。 háizi men bǎ fángjiān nòng dé yītuánluàn māmā huílái shí hěn shēngqì — The children messed the room up; their mother was very angry when she returned.

4. indiscriminate; random; arbitrary

   不要乱买东西，先想清楚再决定。 búyào luàn mǎi dōngxī xiān xiǎng qīngchǔ zài juédìng — Don't buy things at random; think clearly before deciding.

5. illicit sexual relations; promiscuity (old/formal usage)

   他因与人通乱而遭家族驱逐。 tā yīn yǔ rén tōng luàn ér zāo jiāzú qūzhú — He was expelled from his family for engaging in illicit relations.
