1. as; in the capacity of; used to indicate role or identity

   他以老师为榜样。 tā yǐ lǎoshī wèi bǎngyàng — He takes his teacher as a role model.

2. to do; to behave (in a certain way)

   她为人低调，从不炫耀。 tā wéi rén dīdiào cóng bù xuànyào — She conducts herself modestly and never shows off.

3. by (used in passive constructions: 'by someone')

   这本书为许多人所读。 zhè běnshū wèi xǔduō rén suǒ dú — This book is read by many people.

为 — wèi

1. because of; for; on account of

   他为这件事很担心。 tā wèi zhèjiàn shì hěn dānxīn — He is very worried because of this matter.

2. to do something for someone; to be for (benefit/purpose)

   我愿为你做任何事。 wǒ yuànwèi nǐ zuò rènhé shì — I am willing to do anything for you.
