临 — lín

1. to face; to overlook (e.g. a house facing the sea)

   那座房子临海，风景很好。 nà zuò fángzi línhǎi fēngjǐng hěn hǎo — That house faces the sea; the view is great.

2. to arrive; to come (often used in written or formal contexts)

   列车临站，旅客请准备下车。 lièchē lín zhàn lǚkè qǐng zhǔnbèi xiàchē — The train is approaching the station; passengers please prepare to get off.

3. to be (just) about to; on the verge of; just before (used before nouns or events)

   临考试前，他一整晚都在复习。 lín kǎoshì qián tā yī zhěngwǎn dōu zài fùxí — On the eve of the exam he reviewed all night.
