中间 — zhōngjiān

1. the middle; center; interior

   书架的中间放着一张相片。 shūjià de zhōngjiān fàng zhe yīzhāng xiàngpiān — There is a photo placed in the middle of the bookshelf.

2. between; among (spatial relations)

   我们坐在老师和学生的中间。 wǒmen zuòzài lǎoshī hé xuéshēng de zhōngjiān — We sat between the teacher and the students.

3. in the meantime; during (time)

   你去买菜，中间我会把饭做了。 nǐ qù mǎicài zhōngjiān wǒhuì bǎ fàn zuò le — You go buy groceries; in the meantime I'll cook the meal.
