中 — zhōng

1. (bound form) China; Chinese (used in compounds, e.g., 中华 zhōnghuá)

   中医在国外越来越受欢迎。 zhōngyī zài guówài yuèláiyuè shòuhuānyíng — Chinese medicine is becoming more popular abroad.

2. middle; central; in the middle of

   桌子放在房间的中间。 zhuōzi fàngzài fángjiān de zhōngjiān — The table is placed in the middle of the room.

3. within; among; in (a group or scope)

   学生中有很多人会说三种语言。 xuéshēng zhōng yǒu hěnduō rén huì shuō sānzhǒng yǔyán — Among the students many can speak three languages.

4. while; during (indicating that something happens in the course of another action)

   会议中请不要使用手机。 huìyì zhōng qǐng búyào shǐyòng shǒujī — During the meeting, please do not use your phone.

5. center; middle point; core

   靶子的正中有一个小红点。 bǎzi de zhèngzhōng yǒu yígè xiǎohóngdiǎn — There is a small red dot in the very center of the target.

6. (dialect) OK; all right

   A: 我们现在走吗？ B: 中。 A wǒmen xiànzài zǒu ma B zhōng — A: Shall we go now? B: OK.

中 — zhòng

1. to hit (a target); to strike; to be shot or struck by (a bullet, illness, etc.)

   他被子弹中了，送往医院抢救。 tā bèi zidàn zhōng le sòngwǎng yīyuàn qiǎngjiù — He was hit by a bullet and sent to the hospital for emergency care.

2. to win (a prize or lottery); to succeed in hitting (the target of chance)

   他中了彩票，买了一辆新车。 tā zhōng le cǎipiào mǎi le yīliàng xīnchē — He won the lottery and bought a new car.
