3. severe (e.g., punishment, consequences)

   违章会受到严厉的处罚。 wéizhāng huì shòudào yánlì de chǔfá — Violations will receive severe punishment.

4. father (classical/archaic usage)

   他在祭文中称亡父为严。 tā zài jìwén zhōng chēng wángfù wèi yán — In the eulogy, he referred to his late father with the classical term for father.
