且 — qiě

1. and; moreover (connects clauses; literary/formal)

   此事尚未确定，且牵涉多人，不能仓促决定。 cǐshì shàngwèi quèdìng qiě qiānshè duō rén bùnéng cāngcù juédìng — This matter has not yet been decided, and it involves many people, so we cannot decide hastily.

2. moreover; besides (adds emphasis; literary)

   他不仅成绩优秀，且为人谦和，深受大家喜爱。 tā bùjǐn chéngjìyōuxiù qiěwéi rén qiānhé shēnshòu dàjiā xǐài — Not only are his grades excellent, moreover he is modest and well liked by everyone.

3. yet; still (indicating continuation; literary)

   风雨已停，且路面仍然泥泞。 fēngyǔ yǐ tíng qiě lùmiàn réngrán nínìng — The wind and rain have stopped, yet the roads are still muddy.

4. for the time being; temporarily

   事情且放一放，等情况明朗再处理。 shìqíng qiě fàng yī fàng děng qíngkuàng mínglǎng zài chǔlǐ — Put the matter aside for the time being and deal with it when the situation is clearer.

5. to be about to; to be on the point of

   他且将开口，却被人打断了。 tā qiě jiāng kāikǒu què bèi rén dǎduàn le — He was about to speak, but was interrupted.

6. both ... and ... (used to link two items)

   他且是老师且是作家，身份多重。 tā qiě shì lǎoshī qiě shì zuòjiā shēnfèn duōzhòng — He is both a teacher and a writer; he has multiple roles.
