下场 — xiàchǎng

1. to leave (the stage, field, exam room, etc.); to go offstage or off the playing field

   球员因伤被换下场。 qiúyuán yīn shāng bèi huànxià chǎng — The player was substituted off because of an injury.

2. to take part in an activity; (historical) to take an examination (imperial exams)

   明天上午所有考生都要按时下场参加面试。 míngtiān shàngwǔ suǒyǒu kǎoshēng dōu yào ànshí xiàchǎng cānjiā miànshì — Tomorrow morning all candidates must go in on time to take part in the interviews.

下场 — xiàchang

1. the outcome; the end (often with negative connotation: fate/ending that befalls someone)

   如果你继续这样做，最终的下场可能很惨。 rúguǒ nǐ jìxù zhèyàng zuò zuìzhōng de xiàchǎng kěnéng hěncǎn — If you keep doing this, your eventual outcome may be disastrous.

2. to conclude; to come to an end

   会议在下午五点左右下场。 huìyì zài xiàwǔ wǔdiǎn zuǒyòu xiàchǎng — The meeting concluded around 5 PM.
