下台 — xiàtái

1. to go off the stage (leave the stage after performing)

   演出结束后，歌手谢幕下台。 yǎnchū jiéshù hòu gēshǒu xièmù xiàtái — After the performance ended, the singer took a bow and left the stage.

2. to fall from a position of prestige; to lose status or reputation

   丑闻曝光后，他的形象一夜之间下台。 chǒuwén bàoguāng hòu tā de xíngxiàng yīyèzhījiān xiàtái — After the scandal was exposed, his image fell from grace overnight.

3. to step down (from office or a post)

   在压力下，董事长宣布下台，交由接任者处理事务。 zài yālì xià dǒngshìzhǎng xuānbù xiàtái jiāoyóu jiērèn zhě chǔlǐshìwù — Under pressure, the chairman announced he would step down and hand affairs to his successor.

4. to disentangle oneself; to extricate oneself from a situation

   经过谈判，他终于下台，不再被牵扯进那件事里。 jīngguò tánpàn tā zhōngyú xiàtái bùzài bèi qiānchě jìn nàjiànshì lǐ — After negotiations he finally disentangled himself and was no longer involved in that matter.

5. to get off the hook; to escape blame or punishment

   她找了证据，最后居然下台了，没有被追责。 tā zhǎo le zhèngjù zuìhòu jūrán xiàtái le méiyǒu bèi zhuī zé — She found evidence and in the end got off the hook; she wasn't held accountable.
