下 — xià

1. down; downwards; to descend

   他从楼上走下来了。 tā cóng lóushàng zǒu xiàlái le — He came down from upstairs.

2. below; under; beneath (location)

   桌子下有一只猫。 zhuōzi xiàyǒu yīzhī māo — There is a cat under the table.

3. lower; inferior; below (in rank/position)

   请把文件交给下级部门处理。 qǐng bǎ wénjiàn jiāogěi xiàjí bùmén chǔlǐ — Please pass the document to the lower-level department to handle.

4. later; next (time period, e.g., next week)

   我们下周再讨论这个问题。 wǒmen xiàzhōu zài tǎolùn zhège wèntí — Let's discuss this next week.

5. second (of two parts); the latter

   上半场比赛激烈，下半场更精彩。 shàngbànchǎng bǐsài jīliè xiàbànchǎng gèng jīngcǎi — The first half of the match was intense, and the second half was even more exciting.

6. to decline; to go down; to reach (a conclusion, decision)

   经过讨论，大家终于下了决心。 jīngguò tǎolùn dàjiā zhōngyú xià le juéxīn — After discussion, everyone finally reached a decision.

7. measure word used after a verb to indicate the number of times an action is performed (e.g., 看了一下)
