1. one side; either side

   他站在河的一边。 tā zhàn zài hé de yībiān — He is standing on one side of the river.

2. indicates two simultaneous actions ("doing A while doing B"); used in the pattern 一边...一边...

   她一边听音乐，一边做作业。 tā yībiān tīng yīnyuè yībiān zuòzuòyè — She listens to music while doing her homework.

3. used contrastively like "on the one hand... on the other hand..." (colloquial usage)

   他一边想多赚钱，一边又想多休息。 tā yībiān xiǎng duō zhuànqián yībiān yòu xiǎng duō xiūxī — On the one hand he wants to earn more, on the other hand he wants more rest.
