一头 — yītóu

1. one (as a classifier with large animals or heads of livestock); a head (unit)

   牧场上买了一头牛。 mùchǎng shàng mǎi le yītóu niú — They bought a cow (one head) at the ranch.

2. to have a head full of something; to be baffled/confused (used in some compounds, e.g. 一头雾水)

   他听完解释后一头雾水。 tā tīngwán jiěshì hòu yītóuwùshuǐ — After hearing the explanation he was completely baffled.

3. one end (of an object such as a stick); one side

   绳子的这一头系在树上。 shéngzi de zhè yītóu xì zài shùshàng — This end of the rope is tied to the tree.

4. headlong; directly; rapidly; simultaneously (used to indicate abrupt or simultaneous action)

   他一头冲进教室，忘了关门。 tā yītóu chōngjìn jiàoshì wàng le guānmén — He dashed into the classroom and forgot to close the door.
